Carla C. Baan, PhD, is Professor and head of the Nephrology & Transplantation Laboratory at Erasmus Medical Center, University Hospital Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Her position involves the supervision of doctorate research related to the role of cytokines, regulatory & follicular T cells, tissue repair markers such as cfDNA and extracellular vesicles, immunosuppression clinical kidney transplantation. Dr Baan obtained her doctorate from Erasmus University.
The aim of this translational work is to titrate the immunosuppressive burden on our patients in such a way that side-effects (infections, malignancies, cardiovascular events) are kept at a minimum while at the same time rejection processes are prevented.
Dr Baan has served as the primary author for over 50 peer-reviewed articles and has contributed to 150 additional publications. She serves as a reviewer for the American Journal of Transplantation, Journal of Immunology, the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation, Transplant International, Human Immunology, Transplant Immunology and European Journal of Immunology.
She is the Past President (2011-2013) of the European Society for Organ Transplantation (ESOT), has been the chair of the Basic Science Committee of ESOT, has been a member of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, the Transplantation Society, the Dutch Transplantation Society, the Dutch Immunology Society and the Dutch Nephrology Society. Currently, dr Baan is the Basic Sciences and Social Media editor of the Transplantation Journal.
